Making money decisions together

Suggestions on how to make it easier

  • Set aside a time to discuss money matters and stick to it. This is a "date" to review finances and plan ahead. Choose a time when you will not be disturbed.
  • Focus on the facts and figures. This is where you are and this is where you want to go.
  • Blaming only sets up walls and breaks down communications, so focus on solutions to current problems.
  • Keep each other informed about individual assets and debts. Be open and honest to avoid surprises that could cause problems later.
  • Divide the financial responsibilities as evenly as possible so that neither of you feels overly burdened or put upon.
  • Be open and willing to look at new ways to handle your finances.
  • Use a Budget and Planning Worksheet to strategize your financial goals. Be sure to review this every 6 months.
  • Involve the children in family financial discussion and decisions as much as possible. Show them by example how decisions can be made for the good of all family members.
  • If you feel that your spending or your partner's spending has gone out of control, or if you're having problems resolving a money issue, seek help immediately from a professional counselor.
  • Remember that developing money management skills takes time, so make a commitment to work together on this.
